I came to appreciate all of the characters (100+) in this book and welcomed a chance to see the war from the British and German perspective. At these altitudes their power-weight ratios made these planes very vulnerable to the condition of the air through which they flew. The drama threaded through the station's unchangeable schedule of news and current affairs from early morning to midnight. Characters on both sides are developed in the book before the big raid which sends a stream of over 700 RAF bombers to carpet bomb the wrong target.

The enormous success of his first spy novel, The IPCRESS File (1962), was repeated in a remarkable sequence of books over the following decades. For the British bomber crews the five per cent casualty rate every raid, and the sixty sorties which made up a ‘tour’ and marked retirement from active service, meant that they were ‘three times dead’ before the first take-off. I discovered Len Deighton in the late 80's, while stationed in Germany and read everything I could find of his from the post library. It was a little more than half a pound of bloody offal that hit [the pilot] in the face…But it came in at two hundred miles per hour”), machine-gunfire, and of course, the fire from above. They include the village which will suffer extermination by phosphorus and high explosive, a German anti-aircraft battery, a British RAF officers’ mess, and the Lancaster bombers themselves on their mission. Deighton obviously has done his homework in showing how one massive, confused attack on a German town in the Summer of 1943 devastates everyone involved from the British RAF planners and pilots, politicians, and even more the German civilian home front, not to mention just about everyone else on the German side, from the SS,Luftwaffe, to the totally innocent on the ground.

The Hogarth Press where I’m working, is in the heart of the literary world, with authors coming in all the time. Deighton brings the story up to date (at the time of writing) and the fates of those who survived 1943 are vividly captured in the most evocative and sparing writing style of all. This is not a thriller, but, as he describes it, a story about how the war machine chews up people and throws out bodies.Surely, Bomber ranks with classics such as The Red Badge of Courage, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Catch-22.
