Using a bread knife, carve the bottom 2 sponge layers into the curve of a watermelon. Spread half the white buttercream over the whole cake. Chill for 15 minutes, then spread over the remaining buttercream to make a smooth and even top layer. Chill until very firm. Aim forfour to six fruits on a greenhouse plant and up to four on an outdoor plant, which is usually the maximum number that will ripen by the end of the season.Add the flour mixture on low in three additions, alternating with the milk in two additions. Scrape down the sides of the bowl in between and mix just until combined. Be careful not to overmix! Sift the icing sugar into a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Pour the gelatine mixture into the well and start to mix in the icing sugar. As soon as the mixture feels less ‘damp’, turn it out onto a worktop liberally dusted with icing sugar. My friend Kimberly gave me her cake recipe and it turned out pretty good. This was my first completely homemade cake and icing. We are pretty sure Annie has a milk allergy so I wanted to make sure I knew what was in her cake. She didn’t have a reaction so I plan to make the cupcakes/cake for her party next weekend. I did layer of green cake on the bottom, a layer of white icing, a layer of pink cake, a layer of pink icing, another layer of pink cake, pink icing in little rosette pattern, finally topped with mini chocolate chips for the “seeds”. PREPARE CAKE: Sift cake flour into a medium bowl, add baking powder and salt and whisk until well blended; set aside. Gradually knead in enough of the remaining icing sugar to make a firm but easy-to-roll fondant icing (you may not need all the icing sugar). Using the tip of a small knife dot the food colouring on the icing and knead it in thoroughly to create an even colour. Add more colouring, little by little, kneading well between each addition, until you reach watermelon green.

Oh my goodness… Annelyn is going to be a year old on Thursday, April 4th. Ahhh. I still can’t believe our last baby is growing so fast. I decided to do a ONE in a melon theme. For starters when would she ever turn one again, plus she LOVES watermelon. She actually ate more of it than she did of her cake during her watermelon cake smash. To get the plants to bulk up before winter, increase their day length and do not allow them to flower. Father’s Day is coming up and while it can be difficult to figure out what colour of tie to get for Dad for Father’s Day, a hand made card is always going to be a hit. ThisDIY Father’s Day Watermelon Card is the perfect way to show Dad that he is ONE IN A MELON! So punny, just like Dad!

Later on, I was able to come up with about a half-dozen more plants to temper my plant lusting. “One in a Melon” is special in its color progression. It starts off golden orange and matures to the melon or a vibrant butter yellow. While we often use the term fade, reflecting that a flower lost some pizzazz, in the case of “One in a Melon,” its mature color is just as beautiful and complements the new emerging blossoms.

For a truly white cake, this recipe uses only egg whites in the batter, and none of the yolks that would give it a more yellow color. This is also one of the rare recipes where I use clear vanilla extract rather than pure vanilla extract - just to keep this as white as possible! Keep plugs moist until they are ready to transplant. Just before transplanting, make sure the plugs are well watered. Once they have been transplanted and are actively growing, it is important that they are not overwatered. Overwatering may result in plants that grow more slowly in containers and are more susceptible to disease. Plants should never be allowed to sit in excess water. Cantaloupe melons, with aromatic orange flesh – these are the best choice for growing outdoors and will do even better in a greenhouseMelon-colored flowers and matching melon cones. At 5-5½" wide these are among the largest flowers in the collection. Petals are held horizontally and overlap for maximum display. The cantaloupe flower color is lighter than 'Orange You Awesome' and not a true yellow like 'Yellow My Darling'. Warm the soil for several weeks ahead of planting by covering it with cloches or biodegradable membrane. When melon plants are in flower, make sure pollinating insects can get access – open up tunnel cloches, cold frames and greenhouse doors and vents during the day. PREPARE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING: In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, whip butter until smooth and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add vanilla extract and optional watermelon extract. Add powdered sugar 1 cup at a time and milk 1 tablespoon at a time and whip on medium speed until light and fluffy.
