Tight-fitting masks cause insufficient ventilation, and cause the level of carbon dioxide (CO 2) to rise. CO 2 is known as a respiratory stimulant, and inhalation of CO 2 between the mask and the face causes increased respiratory activity [ 5]. In our study, the significantly higher incidence of de-novo headache in filtering mask users supports that CO 2 inhalation may be a reasonable etiology. The fact that the highest aggravation in pre-existing headache was found in those who use a filter mask and surgical mask together supports this theory; but it is higher in those who use only surgical masks than in those who use only filtered masks, suggesting that there may be other factors besides CO 2 inhalation. In a study of 130 astronauts exposed to high CO 2 pressures during controlled training, the exposed group showed a significantly higher incidence of headache, in addition to respiratory symptoms and difficulty concentrating [ 6]. Another mechanism that can explain headache physiopathology may be external compression [ 7]. In our study, de-novo headache was more common in those who wear eyeglasses. The four pods are filled with scent-free, machine-washable microbeads. The cover is made with jersey cotton on one side and microfiber fleece on the other, so you can choose a material depending on your mood. Buyers found the jersey knit side to be cooler. Although the Nodpod isn’t microwavable, it is freezable for more chill. The mask is available in 10 colors. One downside is that users have to readjust the mask whenever they switch sides. The Nodpod is machine washable and the company recommends washing it before the first use. Overall, migraine hats have other benefits that make them a good addition to any migraine toolkit, Dr. Natbony notes. “Migraine hats are generally affordable and easy to use, and can provide a convenient and non-invasive way to manage symptoms.”

It also feels secure because the anti-slip gel on the headband keeps things in place. Hot sleepers complained that the mask can get warm, but Manta does offer a similar mask with cooling eye cups. Side and front sleepers say the cups are uncomfortable in those positions. Each mask includes premium earplugs and a mesh storage bag. The Manta Sleep Mask is 100% machine washable. The fact that you can pull down part of the hat as an eye mask is beneficial when migraines cause light sensitivity. I've found that the combination of cooling and compression has been particularly helpful in relieving my migraines. You can typically find weighted eye masks that are as light as 4 ounces and as heavy as one pound. Some designs have zippered access that allow you to adjust the weight as needed. For some, a heavier weight may be too much, so you may want to start light and work your way up. It’s not adjustable, so there may be a limit to its stretch and comfort if your head is very large. We also appreciate that this hat is pretty discreet. It’s not noticeably a migraine hat, so although you can’t pull it down over your eyes, you could leave the house with it on if needed. If loud sounds from your phone are another potential trigger for you, try a low-tech alternative like putting a Post-it note that says “Drink water!” somewhere you’ll see it often. Try a less irritating mask

It’s on the bulkier side and doesn’t stay cold for long, so it’s best used for heating therapy only. There’s no one mask that will work for every type of person with migraine, but the TheraICE Form Fitting Head Gel Ice Cap gets as close as possible to being the best choice for nearly everyone. It can be scary to think about, but the hard truth is that the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t going anywhere for a long time. That means you’re going to have to become good friends with your mask, even if you’re vaccinated and boosted.

There may be more than one mechanism in the physiopathology of de-novo headache. Several factors may explain its association with the use of filtering masks, including hypoxia, hypercapnia, local compression, and even mask use anxiety [ 4]. Sleep deprivation, irregular mealtimes, and emotional stress are other sources of headache among healthcare workers during prolonged mask use [ 2]. So is there any merit to the idea that wearing a mask causes hypercapnia, or any other serious health risks? When we put that question to Dr. Bain, his reply was straightforward: “No.” A CDC representative quoted by Reuters gave more context: “The level of CO2 likely to build up in the mask is mostly tolerable to people exposed to it. You might get a headache but you most likely [would] not suffer the symptoms observed at much higher levels of CO2...It is unlikely that wearing a mask will cause hypercapnia.” How can I avoid migraine triggers while wearing a mask? Most of the other hats on our list can be adjusted or positioned to relieve migraine pain on the top of your head, but none of them specifically target that area. But the IceBeanie does without requiring any special positioning or constant readjustments. According to Dr. Natbony, research has shown that temperature therapy (both cold and hot) combined with compression can help reduce migraine pain. While there isn’t much research on migraine hats specifically, there’s no reason to think they can’t work well to provide this kind of relief. That said, migraine hats work well for some people, especially those who find cooling therapy helps them manage their symptoms, but not for others.

Stop debilitating migraines quickly and effectively

The WellPatch Cooling Headache Pads are easy to use and medication-free, so you can pair them with your regular migraine treatment methods. While the hat isn’t traditionally adjustable, the fabric is flexible enough to expand over small and large heads while still providing a comfortable amount of compression for pressure relief. We also like that the hat can be positioned in two different ways: pulled down over the eyes to relieve light sensitivity or sinus pain, or moved up above the ears to target the forehead and top of your head. We don’t want to give you the impression that you need to manage all of your stress by yourself. It’s easy to feel disconnected these days, which makes leaning on your friends, family, and community (virtually!) more important than ever. If you don’t have anyone in your life who understands what you’re going through, try joining an online migraine community. Many mental health providers are transitioning to virtual visits, so don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you need it. While Dr. Natbony notes that everyone will have a different preference in terms of style, design, and extra features, there are a few key things you should look for when shopping. Technically you can use the Huggaroo Soothe Unscented Microwavable Heating Pad for with heat or cold therapy, but we think it stands out from the crowd more when used as a heating pad. Not only does it have a cozy, plush feeling that radiates comfortable heat during use, but it’s also unscented, making it especially helpful for people with migraine who have sensitivity to strong smells during episodes.
