I would have expected to see a heartbreaking vibe similar to the one in The Locker Room by Amy Lane and it felt more like your typical fluffy smut-romance. Reid's depiction of their immediate physical combustion contrasted with a satisfying emotional slow-burn is masterful.athletes may not have much time for doing other dating activities and not figure out right away that their relationship evolved into something bigger tha just sex. I don’t know much about hockey, but after reading this I definitely have a new found love for the sport. Something definitely weird when reading this book is realizing how big a star Shane is along with Ilya, and realizing how weird it is in retrospect that Shane is never once mentioned in Game Changer. It was easy to see why Ilya found so much pleasure in teasing him until he made him blush and stutter, lose control and beg. I’d expect some backstory on what the two had previously discussed or how much time they spent getting to know each other off-page.

They had a deep respect for each other as players and people and it really showed throughout the story. I’m a sucker for a neatly wrapped up HEA 💕 But I’ll just have to use my imagination instead and believe that both of them eventually got to live their dream, and that their love was one for the ages. Behind their desire NOT TO WANT EACH OTHER, there are deeper feelings each struggles with: Ilya with his family in Russia and his bisexuality in that culture; Shane with wanting someone he has seemingly hated for years in the press. Both are amazing characters, with Shane being my personal favourite just because he is sooo adorable.

To add to my disappointment with this book is the lack of trigger warnings and, like, no one EVER mentions them. I think one of the more shocking things about this book is finding out that the Shane Hollander all the characters mention in the other books is…not white?
