In 1956, José L. Gutiérrez produced Politec Acrylic Artists' Colors in Mexico, [8] [9] and Henry Levison of Cincinnati-based Permanent Pigments Co. produced Liquitex colors. [10] [11] These two product lines were the first acrylic emulsion artists' paints, [12] with modern high-viscosity paints becoming available in the early 1960s. Meanwhile on the other side of the globe, 1958 saw the inception of Vynol Paints Pty Ltd (now Derivan) in Australia, who started producing a water-based artist acrylic called Vynol Colour, followed by Matisse Acrylics in the 1960s. [13] Following that development, Golden came up with a waterborne acrylic paint called "Aquatec". [14] In 1963, George Rowney (part of Daler-Rowney since 1983) was the first manufacturer to introduce artists' acrylic paints in Europe, under the brand name "Cryla". [15] Painting with acrylics [ edit ] Virtually any flat surface that has been properly primed for acrylic painting will be suitable for acrylic pour painting. Some artists prefer to work on traditional stretched canvases, whereas others may prefer canvas boards or painting panels that are easier to store. The choice is up to you! Each have their benefits. There is more information about prepping your canvas below. Acrylic Pouring Accessories Although they are made commercially available in a variety of colors (perhaps translucent and perhaps not), the raw material allows for the internal transmission of light nearly in the same capacity as glass which makes it a wonderful substitute. This is very much the same as Polycarbonate . A few of the key differences include the fact that Acrylic doesn’t contain the potentially harmful substance bisphenol-A (BPA) and Polycarbonate tends to have higher impact strength (see chart below). For a full comparison of Polycarbonate and Acrylic (PMMA) read here . Specialized tools aren’t required, but using the right kind of brush can make a major difference. The best option here would be a foam poly brush. These help with soaking up the varnish and creating an even coat when applied. Examples of Heavy Body Acrylics are Matisse Structure Acrylic Colors, Lukas Pastos Acrylics, Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylics and Golden Heavy Body Acrylics.

The beauty of pour painting is its unpredictability. So many factors can affect how your pour paintings appear. It can be hard to replicate the same pattern twice! This can be frustrating if you’re a beginner. Bear in mind the following points and it should help you get more consistent results.

Details of the Method

Acrylic paints with gloss or matte finishes are common, although a satin (semi-matte) sheen is most common. Some brands exhibit a range of finishes (e.g. heavy-body paints from Golden, Liquitex, Winsor & Newton and Daler-Rowney); Politec acrylics are fully matte. [24] As with oils, pigment amounts and particle size or shape can affect the paint sheen. Matting agents can also be added during manufacture to dull the finish. If desired, the artist can mix different media with their paints and use topcoats or varnishes to alter or unify sheen.

Though the possibilities of what you can create and personalise are endless, you should consider what surface you would like to paint on and how your paint will behave on that surface. This way you will hopefully get the best results. The term ‘paint marker’ is used loosely to refer to (1) acrylic paint markers (2) oil-based makers and (3) Permanent ink marker pens. So it’s important to know exactly what acrylic paint pens are not. Many artists choose to begin their work on a white ground, but you may prefer to colour your ground before you paint. This can be any shade that you like, but you should bear in mind that the paints you pour on top will be affected by your choice. Make sure your surface is clean I assume that it doesn’t work to be used a second time, as it’s full of water. So I think the method is mostly intended for disposal of partial tins of house paint, a once in a decade DIY activity, not for regular use with loads of water. If used regularly like that it seems like you’d need to use fresh kitty litter as a sponge each time you threw away water. Are you binning it when it is a solid? I think natural kitty litters are pellets made of vegetable fibres. They are also just intended to absorb the water, but less efficiently. It goes without saying that the effectiveness of any acrylic paint is only as good as the quality of the paint itself and the pigment levels it contains. As well as the paint, the quality of the nib or the tip will also play a big part.

6. Techniques Achievable

Ideally, you want a container that is squeezable and has a nozzle for creating a fine line, but also has an opening that's big enough to put a brush into should you want to load your brush. You can often find inexpensive squeeze bottles at a craft store or discount store.

Permanent pens, like Sharpie®, are sometimes confused for paint pens. The vital difference is that they are ink-based as opposed to paint-based and, as such, they behave very differently. Beyond drying fast and working well on white surfaces, they are rather limited. The ink will not show up well on darker surfaces nor work particularly well on porous surfaces. Blending and layering is not possible with ink. Another useful thing to know is that you should tilt your canvas until the paint runs off the side to get the best effect. This is why it is important to prepare your surface to protect it from the acrylics.Acrylic Paint Pouring is a fluid painting technique used to create art by pouring acrylic paint onto a canvas. Many methods can be used to apply the paint to the canvas, some are more simple and are better for beginners – others are a bit more technical! Here we cover the basics of pouring to get you off to a head start! Some pens have reversible nibs or tips so that you get the use of two different style nibs in once piece. The idea of these is good, however, be warned they are fiddly. Normally, a pair of metal tweezers is supplied and, even then, it can be messy turning the nibs around especially when they are wet. Example of blending technique with acrylics. Painting on wooden panel. A demonstration of blending with acrylic paint. No retarders were used. For the last five years there have been regulations in place about Primary Microplastics. But so far the only proposed regulation about Secondary Microplastics involves eventually requiring labelling that educates the consumer on better disposal. So if regulations are created, then acrylic paint tubes will probably say something like ‘Don’t put down the drain.’
