About this deal

They shake down the backs of businesses, but most importantly a family member shakes down the back of every business in every turf they are adjacent too giving access to a huge amount of resources. They can learn the rules quickly, have fun playing and over the course of a few games they’ll discover some of the small subtleties behind winning. The playing pieces come uncolored but if you have any painting skills you will have a blast painting them like I did. The rulebook features some stunning artwork, spread between clear and concise rules explanations and examples.

His skill has led to this being a solid, enjoyable cardboard recreation of The Godfather that combines a few different mechanics into a satisfying set of decisions, and perhaps the best compliment I can give to Corleone’s Empire is that it’s actually quite easy to learn, yet its mechanics hide some genuine depth, making it a really good choice for folks just getting into playing board games. I also like how there is a round tracker included on the board, which clearly outlines any extra benefits or actions that need to take place each round. Play from a hand of cards that allow you to bump off other players, duck behind a car, make alliances and run off to Las Vegas or Italy.

As Eric Lang has proven before, he has a knack for turning established worlds into board games that do so much more that simply bring a well-worn story across to the tabletop.

In later Acts the number of options and strategic actions open to players increases considerably, with more figures to place and plenty of hand management and advanced planning required to source resources to complete more job cards, etc. Each act serves as a round where you place your thugs on the board, grab and spend fistfuls of dough, and toss your enemies into the Hudson River. This is a mob war, and any player who isn’t willing to get their hands dirty is going to find themselves rubbed out pretty quickly. Job cards get you cash and grant you a special action which can range from moving a figure or stealing money out of people’s suitcase, to carrying out the game changing “Car Bomb” action. If you are a Euro-gamer looking for a dudes on a map experience or, if you like the other big tiles form Eric Lang and CMON but want to try something a little different then give this a go. Randomly selected businesses are opened as the game progresses, giving players more choice and giving the game replay-ability. Figures come in two types: henchmen who carry out the more mundane grunt-work, and family members who influence multiple adjacent areas of New York City. Publisher CMON once again shows off its love of abundant miniatures, throwing in plastic representations for everything from the roving gangsters to a police car phase tracker and even a miniscule horse’s head to mark the first player. I also appreciate how the secret bidding is handled by putting your chosen amount in the lid of your suitcase before the whole table reveals their bid simultaneously.

But be cautious: this game is especially suited to players who understand that "Friendship is everything. You need to take “suitcase actions” on the board, making the process of earning cash and then funneling it away for safekeeping more labored and more strategic. If you can live slow players and positively relish the thought of devastating your mates’ plans then this is a game for you.

Establish your presence in a region and you’ll profit from the actions of competing families, gathering guns, blood money, alcohol and narcotics, which can be spent to complete specific tasks. I mean, it doesn't take anything from the whole experience, but they could've made the immersion even bigger if every single card had an individual illustration. Each player starts a game of The Godfather in charge of a set number of thug miniatures and a family member. At its heart, this is a light Euro-style game of worker placement comparable to the popular Lords of Waterdeep, but it's mean in a way befitting its pin-striped source material. There aren’t many games that combine worker placement, set collection and area control quite so cleverly, enjoyably at this.
