About this deal

The Crop Circles is about watering down one of the game's finalities, and in particular the one that relates to meeple placement.

No index existed in my initial copy of the freshly-released game at the turn of the millennium, and I had created one myself to better understand what's going on. Do you play nice and move the Witch to a feature that’s uncontested and not likely to score anyone any points?Carcassonne is a tile-placement game in which the players draw and place a tile with a piece of southern French landscape on it. The Crop Circles: Mysterious circles appear in the fields of Carcassonne, holding a strange power over the knights, thieves and farmers of the realm.

More ways to score; cunning insertion of meeples in places where they wouldn't have normally gone; more or less interaction; more or less tactics; more or less of anything! If you would like even more Carcassonne action than the one included in the present box, you will be happy to know that the line has at least another eight (! The expansions can be combined again and again to provide variety and excitement at the gaming table. I would happily appreciate any advice on which version of Carcassonne to keep; my kids are just getting old enough to start playing board games with me and I’d like Carcassonne to be one of our first family games.

Of course, the Big Box also contains the mini-expansion The Crop Circles , but also The Abbot and The River . At the back of the rules booklet, there is a tile almanac—a thing that is a lot less useful now than it would have been twenty years ago when none of the Carcassonne tile sets had their own special icon printed on their tiles, but still appreciated nonetheless. The expansions can be combined for an incredible variety of gameplay options and hours of unique games!

Unless the opponent you’ve placed your robber on has been working on a massive, sprawling city and they’re getting towards the bottom of the tile stack (meaning they’re likely desperate to complete the feature before time runs out), this mini-expansion almost never pays off the way you think it would. With over 180 tiles and 86 meeples, "pieces of gold", "ferries" and a dice, you can design your own games as you wish and experience endless fun. It’s also nice to have an option out there to be able to score a few points when your tile draws aren’t helping you complete anything. Using the game's signature square tiles, you'll discover a landscape of cities, monasteries, roads and fields.Back in 2012, six mini-expansions were released for the game, each containing a single tile for a seventh expansion. I also enjoyed how the Big Box provides all the materials for six players already, and not just five as the current basic game does. If you’ve got a Carcassonne set that includes the Abbot, then you’ve already got the Garden tiles to go along with it. Life circumstances, coupled with the FLGS I frequented closing its doors, conspired to prevent me from acquiring them at the time.

The Ferries expansion consists of eight Lake tiles—featuring four road segments that end at a centralized lake—as well as a number of wooden ferries, whose shape and size resemble Catan road segments that have been cut in half. The 2017 Carcassonne Big Box (or Carcassonne Big Box 6 as it is referred to in BGG) is not the first iteration of this product. Later, if a player extends a road that has a Lake tile as part of it, they will have the opportunity to adjust the ferry on that tile, potentially re-opening roads that have already been scored. The Gold Mines mini-expansion consists of eight tiles with gold symbols on them and sixteen tiny wooden gold bars.

The game remains fresh and relevant, seeing how these expansions can be combined in millions of permutations. My Thoughts: Without a doubt, this expansion is one of the most in-your-face aggressive expansions that exist for Carcassonne. From then on, every time you place a tile that expands the road or city your builder is in, you get to immediately play another round. In this example, it might seem like your opponent would just add a meeple on whichever feature you were trying to one up them, but remember: the person playing the tile does not perform the action until everyone else has done it.
