About this deal

Morthûl had withdrawn ever further from the day-to-day aspects of ruling a land as large and strife-ridden as Kirol Syrreth. The squad consists of Cræosh (an orc), Katim (a troll), Jhurpess (a bugbear), Gork (a kobold), Gimmol (a gremlin), Fezeill (a doppelganger), and Belrotha (an ogre), who band together under threat of the lich-king’s power, and combine their talents to complete the tasks required of them for their undead overlord. Yet titles like “Ogre and Under”, “A Queen Sweep”, “These aren’t the Druids You’re Looking For” suggest a levity which never really manifested itself in The Goblin Corps. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins.

I will follow behind, once these louts—" And here he took a moment to kick at a smaller orc who was gathering his gear too slowly for Berrat's taste. The isle of Dendrakis, from whose rocky earth the Iron Keep rose, lay secluded in the northwestern corner of the massive kingdom. Havarren, in the process of turning to beat a hasty retreat from the chamber, abruptly stopped short.

Sure they have personality, but not particularly admirable or enjoyable, and no backgrounds or references to their past that make them feel more “real”. It was frustrating to have such vividness in a background setting, and then to have these cardboard main characters acting in front of it.

More than anything, the underlaying sardonic tone of his writing is closer to Sam Sykes' style as are the band of bickering characters.

Without further comment, Morthûl once more rested his chin on his fist and resumed the all-consuming task of staring into space. The rest had mainly to do with simple word choice, and the use of non-setting jargon coming from the mouths of the characters. Still, after uncounted centuries of survival, the Dark Lord isn't about to go down without a fight, particularly in battle against a mere mortal!Sadly, Katim is just the first of several other reader speedbumps I encountered throughout the novel. The world felt rich and dynamic, with a complex political terrain, and a history of war and turmoil between King Morthûl and the kingdoms of humans, elves, and dwarves. This is the classic fantasy story told from the other side, and it's tough to root against these goblins!
