As an audiophile, the first thing I have to say about this package is that the remastering has to be one of the best I've ever heard. On Sound Affects’ opener, Pretty Green, Paul Weller barks about one use for his money in a teeth-gnashing staccato: "I’m gonna put it in the juke box".

There are plenty of wonderfully catchy hooks and great songs that made me think The Jam's overblown and overrated reputation may not be entirely exaggerated. I'm 55 and have been enjoying this absolute gem of a record since it was released in my graduating year of high school in 1980. BirdsEye fish fingers, Heinz baked beans and chips (from the chip pan, slightly overdone), accompanied by a mug of tea and served on a wobbly wooden coffee table to a backdrop of a Grundig Colour TV showing the end credits of "The Changes" (hence the pylon reference)?Sound Affects is The Jam's fifth studio album and features the classic hit 'That's Entertainment' and the number one single 'Start!

That was the sort of sound he imagined we should be going for: hard, metallic, quite stripped-down… jagged. Noted musical influences on Sound Affects include post-punk groups such as Wire, Gang of Four, and Joy Division and, particularly evident in Rick Buckler's drumming, Michael Jackson's Off the Wall. With extensive finagling I was able to extract the record from the way-too-tight inner sleeve without resorting to Caesarean surgery! The album followed the band’s first number one single – Going Underground and features the group’s second UK number one single, Start! There are still eight unreleased tracks as well - all good (better than 99% of Blur's back-catalogue, anyway) though not quite of the calibre of the material on "Extras". Sound Affects was originally released in November 1980 at a time when The Jam was considered the biggest band in Britain.
