About this deal

We meet Sam in the run-up to the release of her fourth book Chaste (“Sex is sacred and we have to honour it as the force that it is. After all, it’s standard practice for publishers to give out free copies and digital copies aren’t exactly going to cost anyone anything. This all led to me feeling let down and disappointed by this book, rather than being truly engaged with it.

I found it a worthy point that what we might adamantly claim to be "our truth" may not be the actual truth but merely our own perception of what happened, we're complex beings and often our feelings don't bear any relation to the facts, our life experiences, insecurities and triggers all affect our perception of a situation. And her career is booming: she’s just hit three million followers, her new book Chaste has gone straight to the top of the bestseller lists and she’s appearing at sell-out events. It had me up too late and I finished it off on a Saturday morning which is a sure sign of a good book! For all the millions that she is meant to be worth, I just could not picture this actually happening. The only problem is, that Sam has just written about the encounter in a recent article as evidence of her sexual awakening.

As the trial by social media raises its ugly head, the toxicity starts to spread and Samantha sees the empire she has worked so hard to establish slowly begin to crumble. Inflected by emotion and distorted over time, even – or especially – our most intense experiences become skewed.

People claimed they wanted the the truth but when faced with it, it was too messy for them to accept. Louise's first novel for adults, Almost Love, was published in 2018, followed shortly by The Surface Breaks, her feminist re-imagining of The Little Mermaid. IDOL is fresh, glamorous, and surprising, taking an issue we all care about and with a deft twist, recalibrating our position. I read mainly Mysteries and Thrillers, with over half of my reads being Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) directly from the publisher/author. Idol isn’t quite as harrowing, although it does very much touch on issues of consent and rape it is less graphic, and instead focuses the story from the point of view of the accused. She has 3 million followers on Instagram, a new book on the best sellers list and is adored by girls everywhere. Idol asks us to confront whether we really remember the past accurately—and what happens if we aren’t the person we remember being?

Whether or not we root out the Sam Millers of the game is immaterial so long as the game itself continues to exist. For example, if you tell a lie enough times, you begin to believe it as the truth, but who has done this? She is determined to succeed above all else and changes her narrative to suit her situation, and will stop at nothing to gain success, even selling her own story to her many followers. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Samantha Miller is the definition of a 'toxic' person and each of her actions documented in this story are completely self-serving with no regard to anyone else's feelings.

Idol's damaged but successful protagonist, Samantha Miller, has made her fortune telling young girls how to live better on the internet. Once Lisa gets in touch with Sam's manager, Sam is on a mission to try and put out this fire before it truly starts to take hold. The only things that stay murky are the parts about the MC's trauma and mental illness, which obviously really took from her character development. The only thing that seems to be true is that if you tell yourself something enough times you will grow to believe it. A Mum of 3 children under 11, she has a slight handbag addiction, a love of floral dresses and fun jewellery. For her previous book, Asking For It, which deals with rape culture, Louise spoke to survivors of sexual violence who told her that two people can be in the same room and what one person sees as the most traumatic experience of their life, the other sees differently. I want to thank Netgalley, Random House UK, Transworld Publishers, Bantam Press and Louise O’Neill for sending me a copy of this book so I can give my personal thoughts. It's a book that dazzles and mesmerises, and will linger in your thoughts long after you finish reading. Her books are bestsellers, she set up a 'spiritual' lifestyle brand Shakti, her podcasts regularly top the charts and there has even been a Netflix documentary about her.
