About this deal

The blade is made from 420HC Stainless Steel, an improved, high-carbon (HC) form of 420 stainless steel. Can you tell me how to take apart the side tan insert, the one with the slot for the additional bit? Viewed from the other side, you can now see that the plain edge is a double-sided bevel, but the serrated portion is a chisel grind. Of note here is the fact that in addition to the typical needlenose/standard combination pliers, there are replaceable wire cutters on either jaw made of 154CM. This is a tool that demands to be carried in its included pouch, likely webbed to either your plate carrier or to the outside of a pack.

The last feature which is underplayed somewhat is the Large Bit Driver, which is a bit holder for the three double-ended screwdriver bits that are included in the MUT. On the arm of the pliers that features the knife and saw, there’s a plastic slot for storing extra bits for the screwdriver socket, but more on that later. One of the first things that popped out to me was how much lubricant the MUT came soaked in, likely for rust protection in transit. Consignments without the sender's address will not be processed and they will be disposed of after 60 days. Being a UK resident, this means considering the knife carry laws, and being a locking knife the MUT is effectively classed as a fixed blade – so not UK EDC friendly.

This warranty does not cover sheaths, accessories, imprinting, colour finishes, cleaning, or sharpening. An important thing to note here is the position of my little finger, and how it lines up with the cutter notch next to the hammer. The thread-lock used makes the turning motion very sticky, but the screw certainly won’t fall out on its own. Starting from the first moment you get your hands on the MUT, I’ll have to talk about that Black Oxide coating!

You could use a couple of washers or something else to fill the space the knife blade occupied, so you don’t need to have the accessory kit to do this conversion (but you do need to add a spacer of some sort). I have even used it to plunge detonation cord into Emulex, which made me feel like Arnold Swartzenegger in Commando. It features a bronze carbon scraper, a disassembly punch, and a bolt override tool, which are essential for cleaning and repairing military gear. The screwdriver bit is nestled inside the strap cutter and features a passive locking system that keeps it fairly secure unless you pull on it.On the scraper tool and disassembly punch side, there’s a hole for the user to connect cleaning rods to, turning the entire multitool into a handle for pulling stubborn bore brushes out, or whatever else. Taking the MUT out into the field and amongst the jobs it was needed for was some tidying up of barbed wire. Something that might be a ‘pro’ for one user can be a ‘con’ for another, so the comments are categorised based on my requirements. The MUT comes in a large yellow paper tray with a white plastic insert, covered by the generic Leatherman instruction card, and all enclosed in the gray paper sleeve with the yellow Leatherman “L” on the top. I tested the saw attachment by slicing through a bamboo spatula right below the head, which took only a few seconds, showing that you could feasibly cut wood with it, which is obviously the purpose of a saw.

When it comes to cleaning rod/brush use, you have the choice of two main connection points, the threaded hole in the side of the MUT and the threaded post onto which the punch screws.

The rest of the tools are accessed by unfolding this impressive multi-tool, the full list is shown below. required a but more grunt, after a while I started to need to nip through one wire at a time purely due to fatigue. Along with the saw, the blade has proven to be comfortable to use and a rival to the hard use knives I have used in the past. The first six items in the list, Needle-nose Pliers, Regular Pliers, Premium Replaceable Wire Cutters, Premium Replaceable Hard-wire Cutters, Stranded-wire Cutters and Electrical Crimper, are all aspects of the main pliers in the MUT. I did not try fitting where the scraper is (A locking mechanism is required to prevent it from folding closed).

It also has the added benefit of making you feel like you’re a hardcore, tactical survival wizard that would be at home in the suburbs or roaming the through the zombie apocalypse. My experience with multi tools, be it from Victorinox, Leatherman or Gerber is that they just don’t stand up to the punishment of everyday use; they do everything poorly and are awkward to use. If it were the other way round this would not be the case, as your palm could not get deep enough into the cutter notch. Before diving into all the detail, I wanted to have a look at a few more of the descriptions and specifications from Leatherman. Laying this all out, the accessory kit has all the replaceable parts, cutter, wire-cutters, punch and scraper, plus replacement screws for fixing all of these parts. The MUT includes a safety feature that is used in other Leatherman multi-tools, but you might not have noticed. It turned out to be a very easy conversion, especially as the accessory kit has a spare bronze scraper which very nicely substitutes the knife blade.
