To me, it's a testament to his talent that he could make such an unpleasant individual sympathetic and, at times, vulnerable. I felt like reading it again just to see how many times she said the same thing, but I couldn't put myself through that again reading the same thing.

The advance signposting of events took away any suspense - it felt like a soap opera rather than a thriller. The endless details of insignificant acts or the sudden backstory of a character that paragraphs later would be wiped from the story only added to the long drawn out nothingness that this book built towards. I remember when I was a young Harry Potter obsessed whippersnapper when my sister first purchased and read this book which would’ve been around 2004, which was unusual for my sister at that time. The police are determined to put away Maura once and for all - and not everyone in the family think that's such a bad idea.
