He has been on my reading radar for a while now but The House In The Woods is my first opportunity and introduction to his work. The sins of the past have a very long and strong reach right into the present and the author has done a fantastic job of creating a story that will leave you guessing until the last possible minute whilst taking you on a journey of many unexpected twists and turns. So I should start by saying I listening to this as an audio book and I think that the narration had a big part to play in my initial lack of enjoyment of the novel as a whole. The story and setting was fresh, new, and original enough to feel like an inspired canalisation of Holmes, rather than a sneaky, wannabe lookalike. On the other hand Amber views looking after Evie at Heronbrook as an escape for herself away from the trauma of what she has experienced at work. My disclaimer is that I have an uncorrected proof, so apologies if any of these issues don’t appear in the finished edition.With a checkered past, Atticus and Mack find themselves head to head in the courtroom, as the pressure builds towards the verdict. The guilt weighs heavily on Evie and she is reluctant to shed any light as to why but a series of alarming and troubling events and coincidences really start to unnerve her. This book also has a thing about chess, so all the avid chess players this is definitely a book worth reading.

What follows is the investigation from Atticus Priest whom is tasked by the wife of the accused to clear her ‘innocent husband’. Leave the reader in suspense until everything really needs to be revealed and also lead them up the garden paths so many times that they really can’t decide who the culprit is.
