About this deal

Remely M, Hippe B, Geretschlaeger I, Stegmayer S, Hoefinger I, Haslberger A. Increased gut microbiota diversity and abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Akkermansia after fasting: a pilot study. Wien Klin Wochenschr. 2015;127:394–8.

As a result, A. muciniphila has been shown to be more effective when it is dead vs. live. It is not alone in this effect; several lactic acid-producing probiotic organisms, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacter species, have also been effective when heat-killed. The effectiveness of these "zombie" or dead microbes is challenging the commercial dogma that the only effective probiotic bacteria live as expressed in colony-forming units (CFUs). That is not the case for A. muciniphila . What Makes Akkermansia muciniphila Important? The study went further: after clearing a new group of mice of all bacteria with antibiotics, some were implanted with stools from the lard-fed mice and some with stools from the fish oil-fed mice. Both groups were fed with lard, but the mice implanted with stools from the fish oil-fed mice showed increased levels of Akkermansia despite this. This tells us that having a strong community of Akkermansia in our guts can protect us from the effects of a less than ideal diet, at least temporarily. We plan to invest in the development and management of observational studies in close collaboration with the prescribers. The products formulated with Akkermansia muciniphila pave the way for a new generation of food supplements.” Paparella A, Shaltiel-Harpaza L, Ibdah M. All the effects on the mucin layer by Akkermansia muciniphila are exciting, but what makes researchers excited are its effects on diabetes and obesity. Prebiotics come from carbohydrate foods—mostly fibre—that our bodies can’t use to extract nutrients from. It ends up in our large intestines and becomes food for the bacteria there. That’s why fibre is so important: not for us, but for our gut bacteria! Guevara-Cruz M, Flores-Lopez AG, Aguilar-Lopez M, Sanchez-Tapia M, Medina-Vera I, Diaz D, Tovar AR, Torres N.
