About this deal

I’ll admit it. I intentionally slowed my progress through this book. After each story, I would put it down and read something else for a while. I wanted time to let Ito’s imagery linger, and not just rush headlong into the next story. Serial Escalation: The woman in the second chapter keeps having worse issues to deal with, asking countless questions seeking advice and always taking the worst options, destroying her life with increasingly drastic and damaging choices. Her question was dismissed by the crossroads boy with a remark to find a bigger problem, Rather than taking the response as a dismissal or an opportunity to reexamine the severity of her issues, the woman fell into a quest to literally find a bigger problem and do it again each time she worsens her life. When she self-immolates and is hospitalized, the question remains whether she was suicidal or whether she was just creating a bigger problem for herself. A Talk with Junji Ito | Creator Interview | VIZ, archived from the original on June 2, 2022 , retrieved June 2, 2022 Ohhh yess , I promised myself that I will read a lot of JUNJI Ito books in 2021 , and here's the first part of that promise. I am all set to get disgusted and horrified again. AGAIN. That night, as Ryuusuke looks out into the fog from his room, another girl is playing the game. She sees someone walking up to her, so she hides her face with her schoolbag. It turns out to be an attractive young man. The girl asks him if her love life will be good, but he tells her that it's not worth trying.

Why the handsome boy final achievement was to seduce a lot of teenagers and torture them telling them he doesn't love them?Collects: Used Record, Shiver, Fashion Model, Hanging Blimp, Marionette Mansion, Painter, The Long Dream, Honored Ancestors, Greased, and Fashion Model: Cursed Frame Mimi's Tales of Terror (a.k.a. These dark beings came from the deepest pits of hell to wreak havoc upon humans. To feast upon their souls, and flesh, rip out their life source, and to be the number one ruler of planet Earth. Painter (from Tomie), a story about a strange but beautiful woman named Tomie who wishes for an artist to accurately capture her beauty, and all the misfortune that happens as a result... The story never explained, if we take the theory of the handsome boy being a normal 6 year old boy who just ran out of his house, how he became that evil ghost/apparition. Or why all suicides he provoke were in the same way as the woman ten years before. If it was a "fake clue" it would need to be explained, if the handsome boy wanted the main character to be suspicious... why? Just to make him insane about it? And Ito is about ideas at least as much as he is visuals. Take the opening story, “Used Record,” for instance. There's really no strong visual inherent in the concept, but the story works beautifully nonetheless.

Hey! Over here...

Ito began to draw manga at the age of 4, taking inspiration from the works he read in magazines. He continued to draw as a hobby until he became a dental technician in 1984, where he struggled to find a balance between the two. [6] Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1963, he was inspired from a young age by his older sister's drawing and Kazuo Umezu's comics and thus took an interest in drawing horror comics himself. Nevertheless, upon graduation he trained as a dental technician, and until the early 1990s he juggled his dental career with his increasingly successful hobby — even after being selected as the winner of the prestigious Umezu prize for horror manga. Collects: The Face Burglar, Scarecrow, Falling, Red String, Honored Ancestors, and The Hanging Balloons Personally I found this a real shame, as I had been buying into the rather sweet and sad story up until being unceremoniously dumped by the scriptwriter into not only a limp 'big reveal' in a Tale of Two Sisters style, which threatened to destroy the entire carefully-built premise of the whole movie, but also an ending which was both confusing and somewhat unnecessary in the light of previous events.

Speelman, Tom (July 25, 2021). "Junji Ito thinks the world has gotten scarier, but not as scary as his manga". Polygon. Archived from the original on March 30, 2023 . Retrieved March 30, 2023. While walking home, Ryuusuke runs into Reishi. He tells her that everyone's worried about her and that he believes he went too far that morning. However, he still loves Midori and just wants to be Reishi's friend. When he attempts to explain his actions, Reishi takes out a box cutter and slits her own throat. In “Mansion” a young man takes up the job helping relieve the unending pain of a young boy. It’s a live-in position, and he can be called upon at any time of day to render his services. Only the boy’s physical pain is scattered throughout his family’s large mansion, away from his body, and to relieve him of it means spraying painkillers into empty rooms and “massaging” the air itself. It’s not long before he, and his coworkers, begin to succumb to the same madness that overtook the boy’s parents. Collects: Red String, Used Record, The Gift Bearer, The Bridge, The Circus is Here, Beehive, Maptown, Headless Sculptures, Dying Young, Shiver, Scarecrow, and The Will Collects: Blood-Slurping Darkness, The Ghost of Golden Time, Roar of Ages, Secret of the Haunted Mansion, Glyceride (a.k.a. Greased), The Earthbound, and Dead Man Calling

Fashion Model was a standout to me, the monster of the tale being absolutely horrifying to look at. The art style here is terrific, Ito at his best! Really glad there was a bonus story featuring the “model” Fuchi. Tomie was adapted into a series of films, beginning in 1999. Several other works of Ito's have subsequently been adapted for film, television and videogaming:It is a fairly well made movie when all is said and done. No, it's not perfect, and no, it's not a very good adaptation of the original manga, but it works in its own convoluted and odd way. I actually enjoyed a good majority of this film, only finding the last third or so of the movie truly mediocre. The rest of it enjoys some great acting, some really decent directing, some fitting musical cues, and some great settings. While I will never give this movie an award for being amazing, it works quite well for what it is, an adaptation of a really good manga. Honored Ancestors (from The Face Burglar, 顔泥棒 Kao Dorobou), a story about an amnesiac girl and the encounter that caused her to lose her memories and about carrying on the family line. At all costs.
