Wormhole technology — invented, with delicious Hamiltonian snarkiness, by a couple of wiseass pranksters — has opened up the galaxy to human expansion, and expand we have. The Commonwealth is the governing body over all human spacefaring endeavors, and colonization plans are drawn up in carefully determined phases, with new sectors of habitable space opening up gradually as wormholes are opened, planets are surveyed, and development needs assessed. I enjoyed this book (which is part 1 of a 2 part story - see Judas Unchained for aprt 2) which takes place in the Commonwealth - a version of human kinds future where the stars are within reach via wormholes and you can, mostly, if you're reasonably careful, live forever! Jerkass: There are a lot of characters which could be called this, but the cake goes to Nigel Sheldon, who revealed the wormhole technology he and his buddy Ozzie had been developing by basically going to Mars to make fun of the NASA astronauts who were just arriving ◊. This is "book bloat" at its worst. There is so much non-essential garbage in this book that I could not wait to finish. It is filled with non-essential details of people you wind up not caring about and who, in effect, are not all that germane to the story or even worth caring about.

Nevertheless I recommend this novel, and I went ahead and bought its sequel as well, titled Judas Unchained.

We also have Kime who is a Captain from many generations past. Kime is enlisted on a mission to go to a far off barrier which has been discovered in Space and see if he and his team are able to find out what is behind this barrier. Little does he or the team know that there may be far more than they bargained on hidden away, and it may be hidden for a reason (this is the major thread of the story which most of the characters connect to).
