About this deal

The county day, called Sussex Day, is celebrated annually on 16 June, the feast day of St Richard of Chichester, Sussex's patron saint, whose shrine at Chichester Cathedral was an important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. With this diversity of language and determination of spirit in mind, I caught up with Peter Benner last week to tap into his memories of the Sussex dialect: It’s not what you say, it’s the way that you say it! The sport of stoolball is strongly associated with Sussex; it has been referred to as Sussex's 'national' sport [17] and a Sussex game [18] or pastime. [19] The sport's modern rules were codified at Glynde in 1881. [20] Modern stoolball is centred on Sussex where the game was revived in the early 20th century by Major William Grantham. [21] [22] According to linguist Richard Coates an organisation called The Men of Sussex had as its motto, Non cogemur, a Latin translation of the motto. [11]

County slogans are designed to entice tourists, whereas mottoes are often fear-inducing statements designed to warn outsiders of a region’s ferocious might and superiority. Known locally as the 'Pride of Sussex', the round-headed rampion ( Phyteuma orbiculare) is the county flower of Sussex. The plant is more common on the South Downs than anywhere else in the United Kingdom. Gill went on to found an art colony in Ditchling known as The Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic, which survived until 1989. The 1920s and 1930s saw the creation of some of the best-known works by Edward Burra who was known for his work of Sussex, Paris and Harlem and Eric Ravilious who is known for his paintings of the South Downs.

Through this scheme, Tony was able to publish his first book in 1976, We Wunt be Druv, a mixture of songs and folklore of Sussex, much of it originating from recordings made during the 1950s and 60s. This venture was slightly different from the other books in this scheme in that the EFDSS profits would be shared equally with Tony. From 1963 through until 1978, Tony edited the magazine, English Dance and Song and a number of Sussex songs with biographical articles would appear in the magazine. There is nothing about the River Ouse to make it the best or most beautiful waterway in the country. It doesn’t have the Turner painting bend of the Thames, the spectacle of the Severn Bore or the steep valleys of the Wye. But it is charming all the same, and quite perfectly embodies the somnolent, quiet appeal of East Sussex. The climate of the coastal districts is strongly influenced by the sea, which, because of its tendency to warm up slower than land, can result in cooler temperatures than inland in the summer. In the autumn months, the coast sometimes has higher temperatures. Rainfall during the summer months is mainly from thunderstorms and thundery showers; from January to March the heavier rainfall is due to prevailing south-westerly frontal systems. The name of Harvey has long been associated with the supply of beers, wines and spirits in Sussex. The family originated from London, but records of the 1790's recall the delivery of Old Red Port, Sherry and Claret in Lewes and its surrounding villages. It’s possible to do Lewes Bonfire Night as a day trip from London or Brighton, but public transport restrictions can make logistics a headache, and you’ll miss the bonfire society gatherings at the end of the night, which start and finish late. Adle . Slightly unwell. “ My little girl seemed rather adle this morning, so I kep’ her at home from school.” Sussex Pond Pudding is a traditional pudding believed to have originated in Sussex and first recorded in the 17th century.

This is part of a series of steps to champion the United Kingdom’s national identities. Earlier this year, the department launched a new initiative to support the ‘tapestry’ of traditional English counties being displayed on street and road signs. The government also published a new online interactive map of England’s county boundaries. In 1681 Charles II granted William Penn lands in what became Pennsylvania and Delaware. Amongst those whom he carried to North America as colonists were 200 people from Sussex, mostly Quakers, who founded settlements named after places in Sussex including Lewes and Seaford in Sussex County, Delaware and Horsham Township and Chichester in Pennsylvania.

You’re right bouy, oi come from Wivelsfield.” he replied and of course, Wivelsfield is in fact three miles from Haywards Heath. Lowerson, John (1980). A Short History of Sussex. The traditional games of England, Scotland and Ireland: with tunes, singing rhymes and methods of playing according to the variants extant and recorded in different parts of the kingdom. London: David Nutt. A handful of counties such as Aberdeenshire in Scotland and Berkshire in England have elected not to have a motto – and those are shown in grey on the maps. In ages past the major occupations of Sussex included fishing, iron-making, seaborne trade and the wool trade.

In the 2001 census this urban area included Reigate and Redhill in Surrey but in the 2011 census it did not.

It’s a saying that reflects the independence, spirit and pride that’s always been at the heart of the county and we feel it fits with the Harvey’s ethos,” says Trimm. I get a lot of energy from collaborating with others, and I’m enthusiastic to see where a suggestion might go… Most recently I collaborated, designed, made, and exhibited with Karl Sebastian a lamp made from glass, brass, and steel. This will be on show at London Design Week 2023.

for administrative purposes, into two county council areas (East and West Sussex) and one unitary authority, the city of Brighton and Hove. We felt that WPA Pinfold’s in-depth knowledge of the brewing industry was key in ensuring our brand was in safe hands,” says Bob Trimm, Harvey’s sales and marketing manager. Written by W. Victor Cook in 1914, the below is both an example of some Sussex dialect and also draws on what is the motto of Sussex “We wunt be druv”– in itself an embodiment of the Sussex spirit that we will not be bullied, cajoled or persuaded to do something we do not wish to do!
