About this deal

The Insect Lore butterfly kit is one of the most popular caterpillar-to-butterfly kits on the market. The kit comes with all the equipment you need to get started raising caterpillars. You get a large terrarium/habitat, a feeding dropper, and instructions. Caterpillars spin silk using tiny spinnerets located on the lower part of the head. When you see a caterpillar moving its head from side to side, it is usually spinning silk.

Generally, it takes between five and 21 days for caterpillars to change into butterflies. The length of time depends on various factors such as species of caterpillar, environment, and outdoor temperature.

caterpillars (a live butterfly culture) will arrive in a clear plastic cup with all of the nutritious food they need. Place the cup in a safe place away from direct sunlight. The caterpillars will remain in the cup and will eat, spin silk and grow to TEN times their original size! After seven to ten days they will hang upside down and harden into chrysalides (chrysalides are also known as pupae). Start with some paper towel on the bottom of your net, the caterpillars will poo a lot so using paper towel makes it easy to remove. What happens to the animals after the life-cycle lessons are complete? Companies that produce butterfly kits, such as FOSS, consider them useless at that point. FOSS actually recommends killing animals, such as snails, by “collecting them in a bag and placing them in the freezer” and then disposing of them “in the trash.” Caterpillars don’t need to be given water, they get the water from their leaves. However, they do like a slightly humid atmosphere so it’s a really good idea to mist the net once a day to keep the humidity levels up especially if you have air con or heating on.

The birth of the butterfly? After 7 -14 days the chrysalides will darken and you will be able to see the colours of the butterflies through the shell. As the butterfly emerges, it will rest while pumping its wings to full size. After 1 or 2 hours the wings will be full sized and hard and the butterfly is ready to fly. Now you can decorate the inside of your Pavilion or Garden with flowers, twigs & leaves. You can keep your butterflies for 2 – 3 days feeding them sugar solution (sugar and water) or fruit before releasing them in your garden. Once you have the kit you follow the instruction booklets and you can then easily observe the caterpillars grow, pupate and then emerge as beautiful butterflies. Raising Butterflies without a Kit
