While the set’s high pricetag might be a barrier to some, this is a 4000+ piece set, and there aren’t teeny tiny elements here, you’re getting a LOT of LEGO and a lot of useful grey elements to boot, as well as 22 minifigures, so I think, all things considered, this is really good value. Expensive, but does not feel like a rip-off. The good news is that there’s a way out of the dungeons. A section of the outer wall can be shifted aside, leading to sweet, sweet freedom. While those parts are all interesting, and sure to whet the appetite of custom builders, the castle fans are going to be over the moon for these updated Lion Knight flags and cape. The logo here has had some light updates from the original version, preserving the classic part’s rarity while creating a swanky updated look for the faction. Lego appears to have based the Lion Knights’ Castle on structures from the late medieval period and the gatehouse in particular reminds me of Bodiam Castle’s iconic frontage. The castle walls and turrets really look the part with a plethora of period details including ramparts, arrow slits, a working drawbridge and a portcullis that slams down in an instant, thanks to a clever Technic mechanism.

Includes 9 minifigures: king, queen, princess,, lion knight, falcon knight, young squire, nobleman and 2 soldiers! And then there’s the impressive collection of shields that come in this set. Do you recognise them all? A wonderful, ambitious and genre-defining LEGO Castle that’s a fitting way to celebrate LEGO’s 90th Anniversary. The second key strength to 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle’s exterior design, in spite of the one colour, is in the various angles that the entire structure is built across, with changes in direction and grid lining coming several times around the outer wall. There are certainly squared-off sections to the building as needs be, but the all-round construction follows a curious, more rounded foundation that so cleverly changes the aspect and appearance of the castle depending on what angle you look at it from. Lion Knights’ Castle will go on sale on 3 August 2022 for LEGO VIPs, and 8 August for everyone else, and will be available exclusively from LEGO.com or your local LEGO store.There are also plenty of instances of Nice Part Usage (NPU) to be found. For example, this small water feature/cistern uses a minifigure energy blast for the falling water.

Old meets new! Here’s a comparison between the old Lion Knights from 6080 Lion King’s Castle, just to demonstrate how far printing standards have come. The play feature of the wheel/mill works very well, with rotation on both sides of the wall. The spinning wheel uses some simple Technic gearing to turn the millstone, which sits on a smooth tile base. I’ve spent more time than I care to admit in this room, now if only I was able to sit down could I really put it to its proper use.If you watched really closely, you might have spotted another one of the castle’s treasures. Hidden behind the sliding wall is a golden frog! This secret is only unveiled when the castle is opened up; it’s completely enclosed otherwise. (And later, it’ll be hidden even further behind a ladder!)
