The book serves as a sequel to Only Time Will Tell, the first part of the Clifton Chronicles. It was followed by Best Kept Secret, published in March 2013. The story contains a variety of interesting secondary characters, including: a prison warden; a literary agent; a book publisher; a butcher; a teacher; Emma's New York relatives; a Polish aristocrat; a private detective; German officers; and more. The phrase, "sins of the fathers" appears in the Ten Commandments in Deuteronomy and Exodus. The phrase also appears in the book of Numbers and in Jeremiah. So, the phrase is linked to the keeping of the commandments and the consequences of sin passing through the generations. But the phrase is also a concept that is observed; sin does have consequences. The children of those who sin do in fact inherit the seed of sin and the sin nature. Moreover, certain sins carry intergenerational consequences. One thinks of abuse, alcoholism, and other sins of personal assault, violations of the image of God in the human being. He does not romanticize his father's sins, and there were many, but this really does touch on the 'shades of grey' (between what is right and wrong) reality of the world we exist in. As much as this book holds the horrors of the criminal underworld, it too has captured tenderness between father and son. Overall, the primary theme in this installment is the complexity of family bonds- the good, the bad and the ugly. There are a few interesting juxtapositions and plenty of food for thought. We are each responsible for our own sins, he for his, and I for mine. We are not intended to bear each other's. No one can survive that burden." Beaumont has always been an interesting character. His life has taken many paths over the years, but now he has reached retirement age and although he’s mellowed a bit, he has finally carved out a niche for himself as a private detective. That doesn’t mean his life is dull by any means. Turns out life has a few more surprises in store for Beaumont. These new developments will once again change the entire dynamic of his life. As Beaumont digests all that he has learned, the hunt for his client’s daughter leads him straight into a murder investigation. This case, as usual, is compelling, revealing the darker side of human nature.

Ancient References and Origin 

After reading For the Sins of my Father by Robert DeMeo I can say my views on the mafia and the lives these mobsters lived has been altered drastically. This book was filled with emotion suspense and above all I think it was a book of love. The genuine love Robert had for his father was truly something I admired about the book. Unlike other kids at school who's father's were policeman, firefighters, or lawyers Albert DeMeo had no idea what his father did. A devoted family man, Roy DeMeo loved and cared for Al, his two sisters, his mother, and his extended family; but he didn't dress, talk, or act like any of the other Dad's in the neighborhood. With his tailored suits, silk shirts, impeccably shined loafers, pinky ring, and his gun, Roy would go to work late at night, to do business with Albert's many 'uncles'. The focus remains on the identity of Harry's father,as that would have a bearing on his future.But that identity still cannot be proved,in this book. The covenant of grace tells us that Jesus lived the life we could never live and died the death that should have been ours. This great exchange — we get his life and he gets our punishment — frees us from the cycle of sin and its sorrows. We may therefore pray with expectation that there will be a multitude of our family members safe in the arms of Jesus when he comes again. Only days before Britain declares war on Germany, Harry Clifton, hoping to escape the consequences of long-buried family secrets, and forced to accept that his desire to marry Emma Barrington will never be fulfilled, has joined the Merchant Navy.

BUT OH MY GOD. I started reading the book at about 4 thinking I would read some chaps during the two hour power cut. Being lazy nowadays - I had convinced myself I am losing my appetite for books. But Archer just proved that my tummy is destined for unseen obesity levels! Many reviewers wondered what Albert DeMeo was miserable about, since he lived a charmed childhood and what I say in his defense is our adulthood certainly clears the childlike cobwebs from our eyes and paints our parents as human beings with feelings and fears and sins of their own. Now apply that knowledge to a person whose father was in the mafia. I am sure there are many inner struggles between right and wrong, as the mafia has been famous for helping people who have been turned away by the police just as much as they've been nightmarishly devilsome in their dealings against people. It is likely such memories of the just and unjust actions of his father plague DeMeo as he walks with his memories today, so I believe he is deserving of a little complaining. This is the BEST book I have read in the 16 years of my life. Sure I am an archer fan , but my expectations weren't really high after the average only time will tell (with a stunning finish though) The book is well written. The plot twists and turns. Jance inserts some humor in the story. J. P. Beaumont is now retired from the police force and is working as a licensed private investigator. His wife, Mel, is the Chief of Police of Bellingham. In this book Beau is hired to find a missing girl. She left her new born baby at the hospital and disappeared. Jance seems to have such interesting plots and characters in her books. I enjoyed Lucy, the Irish Wolf Hound. She was a unique character in the story. There was no action in the story, but I was kept engaged through-out. The book is a pleasant change of pace type of book.

The book starts off with a detailed description of prison life,something that happens in Archer's books quite frequently,since his own time in prison.And it is about a wrongfully convicted man,which Archer believes himself to be,when he was convicted.

Archer remains a powerful narrator and linguistic sculptor, presenting the reader with a wonderful story that expands with each passing chapter. Renewing the layered narrative approach, the reader is treated not only to numerous plot lines through the eyes of various characters, but also a powerful addition to the central story with each section. The reader may bask in the exciting set of plots on which the novel continues to build. While the story has yet to really focus on a second (or third) generation, Archer had laid the groundwork for this and has a number of storylines ready to blossom. Patience, eager reader, as I am sure it all comes to pass soon. Harry meanwhile writes a diary about his time in prison. When one of his fellow inmates, Max Lloyd, is released, he requests Harry to keep sending him diaries as he enjoys reading them a lot. Max publishes them in his own name. Emma reads the 'Diary of a Convict' and recognizes Harry's handiwork. She begins to try and meet him in prison but the warden says that Harry/Tom has been mysteriously transferred. Harry and Pat are recruited by the US army to cause mayhem behind enemy lines. Harry clifton , Giles Barrington and Emma and Maise and surely Sir walter barrington maybe the most regal and awesome characters created EVER. It is sad how all the friends who help these characters die =( but someone has to die in the was right? :P WWII is now in full swing and Giles Barrington (Emma's brother and Harry's best friend), who'd rather party than fight, nevertheless joins the Wessex Regiment. Giles turn out to be a brave and capable soldier whose experiences on the battlefield - and in a POW camp - are impressive and compelling. Sins of the Fathers is the 24th book in the JP Beaumont series. Beau is retired from 3 jobs throughout the series but now working as a private investigator. He employs his usual clever analysis of the information and human nature to follow the truth. It's great to see him and his friends and family again. I suppose it wouldn't be necessary to read all the books but they are so wonderful I am glad I have read them all.The Sins of the Father also follows the progression of Emma Barrington, Harry's only love, and his mother Maisie. The novel shares the point of view of four five focal characters that are integral to the story's progression. Archer recounts the happenings of Hugo Barrington, Emma Barrington, Maisie Clifton, Giles Barrington, and Harry Clifton over the years during War World II. Each character is unforgettable and that is what's most enticing about these novels. I have to know what happens to them. It's not an option not to. If killers are just evil monsters, how can they be such loving fathers; genuine in their affection?
