About this deal

In terms of other white rums I have enjoyed such as Chairman’s Reserve White Label and Appleton White this is more grown up – more “sophisticated”. It has more complexity and subtlety. It bridges a nice gap between fairly standard 40% ABV white rum and the brain exploding 55% and above Overproof rums. We’ve been longtime fans of the spirits released by Plantation Rum. The line comes from the same company that produces Pierre Ferrand Cognac and is blended by the same folks who work on the cognac. For their Plantation Rum line, Cognac Ferrand buys amazing rum from a variety of rum producing islands and then blends and ages the rum in cognac barrels in France. The results have been nothing short of spectacular. It’s clear that Plantation relied heavily on the Trinidad rum for its 3 Stars rum as it the most dominant on the nose and in the taste. It is balanced well, though, with some of the notes from the Barbados rum and just a dash of Jamaican, whose presence is felt a little more on the nose than in the palate. We would have liked to have seen the Barbados and Jamaican rums shine through a little bit more, especially in the midpalate and finish.

As far as a white rum is concerned, it certainly has a lot going on. At 47% ABV, it is admittedly stronger than most white rums.It is unique in that it is a blend of rums from the Coffey Column still and Pot Still at Foursquare and the Double Retort Pot Still rum at Hampden Estate, in Jamaica. If you think about it, the Daiquiri is a drink with only three ingredients, that’s why the choice of the rum is really important, it will give the character to the drink.

It is distributed in Europe by Velier. As you can see from the photo, this is inspired by Luca Gargano. It also takes time to show us the Guardians of Rum shield on the front of the bottle. This is a white rum that is making a statement. White rum does not have to be average. When it comes to the Daiquiri, that classic mix of rum, lime juice and sugar, choosing the right base spirit is crucial to crafting a standout serve – and you’d be hard pressed to find a bartender who doesn’t have an opinion on the best rum for the job.Whilst this is perhaps priced more as a “premium mixer”, I will still try this neat. Sipping Veritas is a very rewarding experience. The Jamaican Pot Still element does go along way in this blend but you certainly get more of a taste for the Foursquare element as you sip. With just three ingredients, the simple serve really allows a rum to shine. “There’s nowhere for the spirit to hide, and it usually stands there pretty naked,” Aljaff says.

Veritas – The Truth. Another lesson in Latin from Richard Seale of Foursquare Rum Distillery. Veritas is a White Blended rum from a Coffey Still and a Pot Still. Smell: The nose starts off with a great amount of pineapple and miscellaneous tropical fruit. There’s something candied like about it – almost like a white coconut. There are notes of alcohol and subtle vanilla, banana (both ripe and green), and marzipan that also waft out. At the moment I’m into Takamaka Rum Blanc from the Seychelles – it sits in that bright and clean category of rums which are great for making outrageously refreshing Daiquiris.” The rear label on the bottle explains what Veritas is expected to be used f or and there is also a little swipe at bottlers who “dose” their rums. Well-rounded flavor profile: Ginger beer and rum add spiciness, cherry and lime juice contribute a great tart flavor, and grenadine rounds everything out with a nice touch of sweetness.

Sip: The palate is soft and round – it begins smoothly with plenty ripe plantain, touches of marzipan, toasted sugar, and subtle tropical fruit notes. A touch of almost argicole like green herb hides at the edge, and a gradual heat builds. There’s also a good amount of sweetness throughout. This is a fairly sweet white rum – for one which is undosed of course. The finish is light and warming, with enough spiciness to keep things interesting. It fades out nicely but has a reasonable length that said. Sweet sugar cane and toffee with some ginger giving it a little zing. It all works very well and has a great balance to it. The Jamaica Pot Still influence doesn’t overpower the overall feel of the rum. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie.

Their rum is unique in the sense that it is made using traditional methods and aged in oak barrels, giving it a distinct flavor profile that is unlike any other rum. One favourite is Veritas from Foursquare distillery, made with a blend of three rums coming from Foursquare and Hampden Estate. It gives the Daiquiri the right amount of exotic notes, you feel the green and the fruits, grass and bananas. It makes the Daiquiri a really complex drink.” Man oh man, do I love rum. I believe it is the most versatile spirit out there. It’s light, it’s dark, it’s sweet, it’s dry, it’s fruit flavored, it’s spiced, and it takes to oak very well so with age it can drink like a woody whiskey or fine brandy. So many amazing rums! [I recommend] Don Q Cristal, Probitas White Blended, Ron del Barrilito, Real McCoy 5 Year, [and] Plantation 3 Star.” — David A. Plantation 3 Star

So which bottles are worth a spot on your shelf? We asked some of the top bartenders around the world to share their recommendations for the best rums for a Daiquiri, so you can celebrate National Rum Day in style. Plantation 3 Stars: the double ageing process gives it layers and fruity notes, more so than others. Its slightly higher ABV makes it easier to present a full-bodied Daiquiri. My favourite part of it is the aftertaste, with lovely vanilla, coconut and passion fruit.” I have played with doing rum blends for a Daiquiri, but [that is] putting too much work into a drink I’m going to chin in two seconds. For me, it’s like people doing twists on Negronis: don’t take it too far.”
