On 7 December 2007, a fragment of a red chalk drawing of a section of the dome of the basilica, almost certainly by the hand of Michelangelo, was discovered in the Vatican archives. The obelisk was originally erected at Heliopolis by an unknown pharaoh of the Fifth dynasty of Egypt ( c. 2494 BC – 2345 BC). The tomb of Fabio Chigi, Pope Alexander VII, towards the end of the aisle, is the work of Bernini and called by Lees-Milne "one of the greatest tombs of the Baroque Age".
