Character- 5 All of the characters grow and change and have desires. Even the characters I don't like I enjoy reading about. The work around relationships is well handled. The romance elements are not gross(to me) or exaggerated. Ultimately character is what keeps me reading, so I've weighted it highest.I'm having a really hard time describing this, even in my head. It's an isekai story, though only barely. We learn early that the protagonist is from our world, but few details beyond that he's familiar with Xianxia stories and feels like he is in one. Which allows him to hang a giant nope sign on the future he's currently on and find somewhere to live quietly on his own farm. The thought of just settling down immediately wasn’t appealing. There was so much out there. So much to see and experience. Now with the crystal he could make art, record glorious images like the ones he had taken on their trip. The Dueling Peaks, for all the fear and terror, had given him a true taste of the vast world out there. The characters are well meaning and diverse, and are such a pleasure to read that any absence makes me itchy to see what the missing character is up to.

I wanted to figure out more and more about how the world functions and is made, which you get decent glimpses into throughout the book. The cycles continued as they always did. The occasional tremor here, the odd pulse there. Places far, far away from it. That, and we started finding my kludge solutions, as we started pulling off siding. I had just kind of… trusted in Qi keeping probably a bit too many things together. They would have held with constant maintenance!
