About this deal

The U8H’s coverage of DCI-P3, the color gamut used for mastering movies for digital cinema and 4K Blu-ray disc, was 97% when measured using Portrait Displays’ Calman color calibration software. And while we’ve logged higher coverage on sets like Sony’s A80K OLED, the Hisense’s performance here is impressive for budget TV.

We've bought and tested more than 25Hisense TVs. Hisense has been growing in popularity over the years, and even though they started as more of a budget company, they're competing with bigger brands now. Hisense TVs offer great value for their price, so you won't break the bank buying one. They've recently started to add gaming features like variable refresh rate (VRR) support, so they compete with some other brands. However, their TVs can also suffer from quality problems like bugs, uniformity, and motion issues. There is a Game Mode and switching it on (manually) brings latency down to very speedy and consistent 14.2ms. Adjustable feet let you select table stand width to accommodate soundbar placement. (Image credit: Future) Hisense U8H review: sound quality By and large the Hisense U8Q is an attractive-looking set. Available in 55- and 65-inch models, the bezel is unobtrusive, and the build quality is what I’d call robust. From the V-shaped pedestal – which unless you have a compact soundbar does restrict placement of sound systems in front of the TV – to the fetching material that covers the integrated front-firing speakers, the U8Q is a well put-together set. As of 2021, Hisense introduced gaming features like HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and variable refresh rate support to some higher-end TVs. Now, their higher-end TVs support up to 4k @ 144Hz, and even their cheaper models have advanced gaming features, such as VRR.Used in a normal living room environment with good ambient lighting and watching directly onto the screen the image quality is good with natural colours and reasonable upscaling and motion. The image also measures accurately out of the box in the Filmmaker Mode.

All forms of HDR are supported in HDR10, HLG, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Hisense says the panel can achieve a peak brightness of 1000 nits, but I’d imagine it’s less than that figure. Nevertheless, there’s a brightness and punchiness to 4K HDR sources that gives a good impression of what HDR can do. Hisense uses a simple naming scheme. Starting with their 2021 TVs, the flagship ULED lineup has a U in front of the model names, while the entry-level models have an A. The first letter is followed by a number to indicate where it stands in the lineup; the last letter represents the year; Hisense uses G for 2021, H for 2022, and K for 2023. For example, the Hisense U8His a high-end 2022model, while the Hisense A6H is an entry-level 2022 model. If there's an R in the model code, it means it uses Roku TV instead of Android TV.

The U8H uses an increasingly common TV design, in which a thin metallic band runs along the sides and across the top of the screen, while a wider, brushed metallic strip serves as the bottom bezel. It’s a simple, classy look that the Hisense U6H, the Vizio M50QXM-K01, and a variety of other TVs share. The bottom bezel sports a chrome Hisense logo in the middle, a trapezoidal protrusion for the infrared sensor, a power button, Google Assistant indicator lights, and a far-field microphone array complete with a mute switch. The TV stands on two long, thin metal feet and has standard VESA screw holes for wall mounting. Percentage Luminance drop at 35 degree horizontal angle from the centre of the screen with 50% white output

All picture and sound adjustments (aside from volume and mute) must be accessed from their repective setup menus. On the picture side, along with local dimming there are advanced settings to tweak gamma and white balance, as well as a full color management system, although those adjustments are best left to calibration professionals. Regular viewers interested in getting the best picture quality for movies would do well to start with Filmmaker mode, and any adjustments you make there can also be applied to the set’s other inputs. It’s most evident during a stream of a Premier League match on Prime Video. The jerky nature of the image is never fully resolved regardless of which Ultra Smooth Motion mode is used, or whether the de-judder setting is customised. Smooth or Standard are your best bets, but the slight blur and jittery motion that still pervades is distracting. A total of four HDMI inputs are provided, with two offering HDMI 2.1 features such as 4K/120Hz support, variable refresh rate (VRR), and auto low latency mode (ALLM). Other gamer-friendly features include Freesync Premium Pro, and there’s also HDMI eARC support.

Measurements

Whether you're looking at Hisense's flagship or budget-friendly models, they offer better value than similarly-priced options from competitors. Hisense TVs are often among our mid-range and budget-friendly recommended TVs. With the stand included the TV measures in at 1232 x 799 x 308mm (whd), or if you’re considering wall-mounting then the rear panel juts out at just 83mm of depth. It’s compatible with VESA wall-mounts, and at 17.4kg without a stand (18.9kg with one), it’s not too heavy.
