About this deal
All lights will have multiple modes, so the range is from the most intense to the most economical option. With a 1,000-lumen output and neat Garmin mount integration, the light can be easily incorporated into your existing cockpit setup. The 1,000-lumen output is versatile enough for riding in a wide range of conditions and comes packed into a light that only tips the scales at a shade over 150g. Your eyes will quickly acclimatise to the lower light level, while on their top output many bike lights can be as intense as a car headlight and dazzle oncoming traffic.

Designed to offer lumens that last, Ion Elite R lets you ride longer with sustained brightness, and features five modes including day flash for use as a daytime running light. It also has a USB charging cable that can be used to turn the light into a power bank to charge other devices, via two USB ports covered by rubber plugs. A highly focused beam can be great for lighting the road in front of you for fast riding, but for the sake of both being able to spot hazards and to enable road users approaching from different angles to see you better, it’s important that some of the light beam spreads into the periphery as well.Like the Magicshine, I was happy barrelling along through the dark at full tilt, with the road ahead of me reassuringly brightly lit. The PNW light also doesn’t fill the area perpendicularly out from the front wheel, whereas the Commuter Pro RT does cast its light out in that direction, too.

Even though in the lab it fell short of its claimed 2,500 max lumen rating, it was still pumping out nearly 2,000 lumens 30 minutes into our test. We also timed them all on max power to find out how long the batteries last, and whether they live up to the brand’s claims. It’s possible to use the Rigel Pro by itself, but it’s better off-road when paired with a handlebar light – especially if you want to tackle more technical trails. It charges with a USB-C port and while it’s not as feature-rich as some competitors, it packs a powerful punch.

The rubber band handlebar mount is more sturdy than you might think and easily transferable between bikes. In essence, the Lars Rover Power is a more ‘basic’ lens, but depending on your application this light distribution could be preferable. We tested how each light performs, riding back-to-back runs on the same trails, comparing beam pattern, LED colour, ease of operation and, most importantly, light projection. But the need for an Allen key and its fiddly nature means that this isn’t so easy to swap between bikes. The band clamp system for the mount is really neat in how it accommodates all handlebar diameters without the need for rubber shims - which seem to invariably get lost. That covers a range of powers suitable for occasional use or as a backup light to full-on high-speed riding. Run time at full power could be slightly better on both, but having larger batteries would naturally increase the size of the units, so it’s a bit of a trade-off.
